Sherman Cymru Presents Bitter-Sweet Comedy

Sherman Cymru Presents Bitter-Sweet Comedy This October, Sherman Cymru present a new play by playwright Alan Harris that is a bitter-sweet, quirky comedy.

Cardboard Dad is based on the concept of Flat Daddies and Flat Mommies, life-sized cardboard cut-outs of parents who are actively serving overseas in the US military. Playwright Alan Harris was intrigued by the idea:

“I wanted to write a play which is not so much about someone in a relationship who goes away but about the person they leave behind. How do you cope when your life is permanently on hold? Do you live for now or live for the future?”

The play is the story of Donna, who we find alone waiting for her soldier husband David. Absorbed in a daily routine of daytime telly, Tesco deliveries and Jammie Dodgers, Donna gets a surprise in the form of a special parcel – Cardboard Dad. Gradually Donna’s two-dimensional companion begins to turn her world upside down.

Cardboard Dad stars Simon Nehan and Shelley Rees, well known for her role as Stacey Jones in BBC Cymru soap Pobol Y Cym. The play is directed by Juliet Knight who has recently directed for Soho Theatre in London and Tramway in Glasgow. She says of the piece:

“Cardboard Dad is an offbeat comedy with real heart. We have laughed a lot in rehearsals and this humour runs right through the piece – but it’s also tinged with sadness and the whole premise of the flat daddies is an odd one. I hope women in particular will identify with the story and the realisation Donna comes to that sometimes the pain of being tucked up safely in a bud is more than the pain and courage it takes to blossom.”

Cardboard Dad is on at Sherman on 15 – 31 October 7.30pm. Tickets are £12, Reductions £10, Under 19s £8 (Previews 15 -19 October £10, Reductions £8, Under 19s £6) and are available from Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online (no booking fees) at
