MAMMA MIA! NEW MUSICAL LAUNCHES A WEDDING DRESS AUCTION! Lying somewhere between Muriel’s Wedding and Mamma Mia, there’s a fantastically uplifting new live musical comedy at the Torch this weekend with a great party atmosphere for all you ladies out there!

With original songs and music played live by Dyfan Jones and his band, The Wedding Singers, lyrics by Jeremi Cockram (who has starred for over 7 years as Pobol Y Cwm’s Sión White), choreography by Maggie Rawlinson who has choreographed for Hollywood movies Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Artificial Intelligence,
and a cast including two West End stars and a host of Welsh talent, The Bankrupt Bride will draw you into a world of forgotten love and fantasy weddings, but it also offers you so much more. Theatr na n’Óg are also running a unique auction in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The aim of the auction is to raise awareness and support in aid of Cancer Research UK and audiences are invited to bring along their wedding and bridesmaid dresses to appear on stage during the show. The dresses are then to be auctioned online, with the closing date being the last night of the tour, 21st November.

Geinor Styles, Director and Artistic Director of Theatr na n’Óg, told us how the show came about. “A good friend of mine ran a bridal shop, and when I used to pop in for a coffee to see her, I was amazed and fascinated by the drama surrounding the brides and their big day, and I knew that it was great material for a play. But, what I found even more interesting was that my good friend was desperate to be in a relationship, let alone get married, and she spent her days getting girls ready for their big day while she was all alone.

I observed and listened to the stories but also watched as her business failed. And as life imitates art, or vice versa in this instance, there began the germ of an idea for a comedy … The play centres on the Bridal Shop owner, Claire, a dreamer who is tied to a business that is failing, Maureen, her caustic assistant and Ray, her ex, who has a fire fetish! She doesn’t know where to turn - until a bride to be enters the shop who will pay through the nose for a dress - quickly followed by Mark, the mysterious man of her dreams! Oh and by the way - you’ll be glad to know my friend has found her man, so it all ends happily!”

This is a show with particular appeal to women of all ages from 15 to 50+, so whether you are married, single or somewhere in between this world première production guarantees a great, fun night out … and with the chance to donate old wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses you can let some of the magic of your big day re-appear and give someone else the chance to buy their perfect dress.

“Every once in a while a film, a painting, a song will stop you in your tracks with its sheer brilliance…Theatr na n’Óg serves up the theatrical example.” Western Telegraph (on Cyrano)
