Pirandello’s classic brought to life for modern audiences

Pirandello’s classic brought to life for modern audiences Following its critically acclaimed West End run in 2008, Headlong’s radical re-imagining of Luigi Pirandello’s classic, 6 Characters in Search of An Author comes to the New Theatre as part of a limited national tour from Tuesday 10 – Saturday 14 November starring Jack Shepherd and Catherine McCormack.

6 Characters in Search of An Author is a dark parable for a media-obsessed age and an exhilarating exploration of how we define ourselves. Six strangers, abandoned fictional characters in search of an author, arrive unannounced during the editing of a documentary film. The documentary maker agrees to film their compelling narrative in a new version which becomes increasingly shocking and leaves the audience questioning what is real and what is fiction.

A bold re-working of a post-modern masterpiece, 6 Characters in Search of An Author was first staged in 1921 and has been updated and re-contextualised for a modern audience in this new adaptation by Rupert Goold and Ben Power.

Jack Shepherd plays Father. His theatre work includes Macbeth, Jane Eyre and Merchant of Venice. On television he is best known for the title role in the long running series Wycliffe. He has also starred in Silent Witness and Man and Boy. His film credits include His Dark Materials – The Golden Compass and Charlotte Grey.

Catherine McCormack plays the Producer. Her extensive theatre work includes The 39 Steps, A Dolls House and All My Sons. She has starred in many television and film roles including Brave Heart, 28 Weeks Later and Spy Game.

They are joined by a talented cast that includes Russell Bentley, Sarah Belcher, Gina Bramhill, Andrew Frame, Jeremy Joyce and Dominic Rouse.

6 Characters in Search of An Author is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 10 – Saturday 14 November. SUITABLE FOR AGES 16+. Tickets range from £7.50 - £25 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at
