Wrexham to get a brand new theatre

The £4.5 million theatre - a partnership between Wrexham County Borough Council, Yale College Wrexham and Wrexham Arts Association - will receive a lottery grant contribution of £3.9m from ACW.

The project will create a 400 seater theatre which will provide a backdrop for the theatrical experience and a common interface for the library and arts centre at Llwyn Isaf where it will be sited.

ACW's Chairman, Sybil Crouch said: "ACW is delighted to announce its decision to award Wrexham County Borough Council with a lottery grant of £3.9 million towards creating a theatre in Wrexham.

"The new theatre will be a wonderful facility for the people of Wrexham, who will have an opportunity to see top theatre companies and take part in local productions themselves.

"This is an important project for ACW as it will provide the communities of Wrexham with access to an important cultural and artistic resource. At present, Wrexham is one of the few towns in Wales which does not have a performing arts facility," she said.

Leader of Wrexham County Borough Council, Councillor Shan Wilkinson is delighted that the theatre project is finally about to become a reality. Cllr Wilkinson said everyone involved in the project were thrilled that ACW had agreed to grant funding for the project.

She said: "This is the news we have been waiting for. The theatre will be a very real asset to the County Borough providing a top quality venue for community performances and visiting theatre companies. It will help attract conferences and prestigious events to the town as well as developing a local skills base in partnership with Yale as the arts are a future key employment sector.

"We are delighted to have been able to lead a general partnership scheme on behalf of Yale College Wrexham and the Wrexham Arts Association."
