It is a rare event to see classical ballet performed in this part of the country, and this achingly romantic, breathtakingly atmospheric and simply gorgeous production is everything we’ve come to expect from the enduringly popular Independent Ballet Wales. In a story which flows gently between the human and supernatural worlds, peasant girl Giselle is driven to kill herself when she discovers that her youthful lover ‘Loys’ is in reality Count Albrecht, and not free to marry her. The plot follows a passion that transcends the earthly world, as a repentant Albrecht visits Giselle’s moonlit grave and she protects him from the deathly touch of her phantom sisters until the dawn sees him safe once more. You could say it is the ultimate romantic ballet: a tale of innocence, betrayal and the power of true love. Combined with the beauty of its choreography, Giselle is as instantly appealing to newcomers to ballet as it is to those already under its spell. A charming and hard working company, Independent Ballet Wales have a unique and unpretentious style, continually pushing back the barriers of classical ballet by using powerful and timeless stories to interpret some of the finest characters in literature. Featuring the original stunning score by Adolphe Adam, atmospheric set and costumes and the eight remarkable dancers of this award winning company, this passionate and dramatic tale is based on the reworking of Giselle by Marius Petipa with choreographic additions by Artistic Director and Creative Wales Award winner Darius James. The company is also proud of its record in training and encouraging young dancers with ex members now dancing in companies across the world including English National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet and The Scottish Ballet. Whether it is the intricate choreography or classic narrative that interests you, both work beautifully together in this production. Giselle can be seen at the Torch Theatre on Wednesday 16 June. Tickets may be reserved online at www.torchtheatre.co.uk or by calling the Theatre Box Office on 01646 695267. |
