ACW consults on its future stratregy and funding schemes

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) invites views and suggestions from the general public on its future strategy and funding schemes which will be introduced from April 2002.

At public meetings held across Wales, ACW will provide opportunities for individuals and organisations to debate:

·artform-specific topics including dance and drama, music, visual arts and crafts and literature;
·priority areas such as arts and young people, community arts, education and training, equal opportunities and cultural diversity.
·regional action plans.

Those attending the meetings will also be invited to comment on new funding schemes that ACW is today (9 November) putting out to public consultation.

ACW Chairman Sybil Crouch says “I am pleased to announce that under the new proposed schemes, lottery funding will for the first time be made available to individual artists as well as organisations. In addition to making our schemes more inclusive we also aim, through significantly reducing the number of overall schemes, to make arts funding opportunities easy to understand and easy to access.”

The new schemes are also designed to fit more closely with the new and emerging priorities and action plans for the arts in Wales. Input gained at these meetings will feed into ACW’s five-year Arts Development Strategy (2002-2007) which will be out for consultation from January to March 2002, with ACW’s new schemes being open for applications in April 2002.

Jenny Randerson, Minister for Culture, Sport and the Welsh Language says “I welcome this step taken by ACW to give individuals and organisations the opportunity to put forward their views on the proposed funding schemes and future plans. It is important that people working in the arts sector are part of an inclusive process where their comments are taken into account and fed into ACW's longer term strategy.

I am also pleased that under the new schemes individuals and groups will have the opportunity to access Lottery funding more easily than they have been able to do so in the past."
