MAGNETIC NORTH’S ACCLAIMED ONE-MAN ADAPTATION OF THOREAU’S CLASSIC TOURS WALES AUTUMN 2010 |
On 4th July 1854 Henry David Thoreau, a 27 year old Harvard graduate, failed teacher and student of Eastern philosophy, walked into the woods near his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts and decided to stay. For 26 months he lived alone in a hut he built on the shores of Walden Pond and attempted to survive entirely by his own resources. Walden, Thoreau’s account of his ‘experiment in simple living’ is one of the most extraordinary and unclassifiable books ever written. Following rave reviews and packed houses for its 2009 tour, Magnetic North are thrilled to be touring their acclaimed one-man adaptation of Walden across Scotland and beyond this Autumn. An intimate, humorous and thoughtful piece of theatre, Walden explores self-sufficiency, the individual’s relationship with their environment and the desire ‘not to live cheaply or dearly but to live deliberately’- ideas as vital today as they were 155 years ago. Walden is a collaboration between Magnetic North’s Artistic Director Nicholas Bone, environmental artists Sans façon (the group name of Charles Blanc and Tristan Surtees) and actor Cameron Mowat (Sunset Song and The Silver Darlings, Aberdeen Arts; Six Characters In Search Of An Author, NTS). Walden takes place in a specially constructed wooden performance area and capacity is strictly limited at each performance so early booking is advised. Walden is suitable for ages 13+. ‘Nicholas Bone’s amazing adaptation. A must-see for any theatre lover *****’ Edinburgh Evening News ‘A tremendously timely piece of theatre... works beautifully ****’ The Scotsman ‘A righteous and humble poetry of the soul ****’ The Herald ‘A passionate, positive call to us all just to stop, and breathe ****’ The List Mon 11 Oct 8pm Torch Theatre, Milford Haven 01646 695 267 www.torchtheatre.co.uk Tue 12 Oct 8pm Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl 01656 815 995 www.grandpavilion.co.uk Wed 13 Oct 7.45pm Aberystwyth Arts Centre 01970 623 232 www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre Thu 14 Oct 6.30pm & 9pm Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea 01792 60 20 60 www.taliesinartscentre.co.uk |
