Press statement by ACW on the Centre for Visual Arts

In March 1995, the Arts Council of Wales (ACW) agreed to award lottery funding to the Centre for Visual Arts (CVA). The decision to do so was based on the recommendations contained within an independent assessor’s report.

The Auditor General for Wales’ report on the Centre for Visual Arts (CVA) contains a number of findings on ACW’s involvement with the CVA, and ACW accepts these findings.

Since 1999, ACW has revised all of its procedures relating to the assessment and monitoring of large, complex capital projects of this nature. This will help ensure that future projects are comprehensively evaluated and that potential problems may be recognised at an early stage.

Additionally, ACW is also presently restructuring its operations, so that it can achieve:

· an improvement in its internal and external communications;
· the strengthening of its regional structures;
· the development of its business function to ensure efficient and effective internal and external services;
· an increase in its planning and research capacity to ensure a clear vision of its objectives to meet the needs of the sector and the demands of the National Assembly for Wales.

ACW’s transition to its new stronger structure will take effect from February 2002.
