Sherman Cymru presents Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure in historical Cardiff Bay bank setting |
Sherman Cymru will stage a new presentation of Shakespeare’s classic, Measure for Measure, between 18 November – 5 December at the The Provincial (the old Natwest Bank), Cardiff Bay.Directed by Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director, Amy Hodge, this production will be an electric take on Shakespeare’s powerful social satire. Measure for Measure is set in a society which is in turmoil. Its Political Leader appoints his hard-line deputy to rid the city of its sexual corruption. However, while the Leader is away, we come to see that the deputy’s strict iron hand approach may not be the solution to the city’s problems. Sherman Cymru’s theatre in Cardiff is currently closed to the public to undergo a £5.4 million refurbishment. This 12 month closure period has given the theatre company the opportunity to pick interesting new sites in the capital and around South Wales in which to perform their work. Designer, takis comments: “The imposing neo-classic building of the National Provincial Bank and its location (the old Red Light District of Cardiff) set the perfect environment for the staging of Measure for Measure, emphasising the main themes of the play, ‘sex’ and ‘power’. By deconstructing the old bank and creating a sex club we aim to offer the audience a multi-sensory experience through the Shakespearean text, enriched with live music, original composition, lights and movement. The multi-layered costumes underlining another theme of the play, the power struggle between the sexes.” With a cast of eight, many of the actors will double-up on certain roles and will also play different genders in the play. Although Measure of Measure will be set in modern times, the play still remains faithful to the themes and the plot of Shakespeare’s play about justice, morality and gender equality. Sherman Cymru has had a very successful year, after receiving another Fringe First Award at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe for their co-production with Shared Experience, Speechless, and after a sell-out tour across Wales and in London of the Welsh language production, Llwyth. Amy Hodge, who directed Sherman Cymru’s last Christmas production, A Christmas Carol, says: “The play is rich in ideas; the morality of justice, the balance between spiritual and earthly existence, and the use or abuse of power. Supported by a live saxophonist the tragic drama runs along aside the bawdy comedy, in this whirlwind exploration of how we should live our lives” Measure for Measure will be performed at The Provincial (The old Natwest Bank on Bute Street) Cardiff Bay, between 18 November – 5 December. Tickets are £14/ £12 (Previews: 18 – 21 November £12/£10 Under 19s: £8). Tickets are available from Sherman Cymru’s Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or at www.shermancymru.co.uk. |
