One of Britain’s most successful and exciting playwrights, Amanda Whittington, is especially interested in a production of one of her plays being staged this April in Aberystwyth.Amanda’s father’s family were born and raised in the town, and she hopes that any Whittingtons in the area will take the opportunity to see it. Louche Theatre will be presenting ‘Be My Baby’ at the Morlan Centre, Queens Road, Aberystwyth from April 28th to 30th at 7.30pm. Then in August they take the production to Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where in 2010 they were nominated for 6 company and individual awards. Set in 1964, ‘Be My Baby’ follows the fortunes of Mary Adams, aged 19 and seven months pregnant. Sent to a Mother & Baby Home; Mary and her fellow inmates have to cope with the shame of their pregnancy and the dawning realisation they will have to give their baby up for adoption. As they sing along to the girl group songs of the period, a touching and funny piece of work unfolds – defined by the songs of the period. Amanda says of ‘Be My Baby’ “The play articulates young women’s hopes, fears, desires and dreams. It takes those feelings seriously, giving voice to them and makes them count for something – this is a story about hope, friendship and survival.” Amanda is hoping to see one of the performances either in Aberystwyth or Edinburgh.
