Sherman Cymru and Dan y Gwely present Gadael yr Ugeinfed Ganrif, Gareth Potter’s autobiographical account of his adventures in Welsh pop, at Chapter in February before touring around Wales. This one-man Welsh language show (written and performed by Gareth Potter) charts the Welsh music scene in the last two decades of the 20th Century, culminating in the nineties phenomenon Cool Cymru and the formation of the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff Bay. This is a heartfelt chronicle of a time and place in Welsh language culture, told with humility and the truly authentic voice of someone who was really there. The show premiered at the Blaenau Gwent and the Heads of the Valleys National Eisteddfod 2010 where it was warmly received by audiences and critics alike. Gareth has been a prominent member of the Welsh pop scene for over twenty five years since forming the band Clustiau C_n while still a pupil at Rhydfelen Comprehensive. During the eighties and nineties he was a member of a number of different bands including Traddodiad Ofnus, Pop Negatif Wastad and T_ Gwydr. Gareth continues to DJ at Clwb Ifor Bach and the Fuwch Goch in Cardiff alongside his acting work which has included roles in a number of television series including Torchwood, Y Pris, Pobol y Cwm, Eastenders and Casualty. He established the company Dan y Gwely with the writer and director Ian Staples in 2009. Radio 1 presenter Huw Stephens says: "Gareth is an enterprising musician and ideas man who has greatly enriched the scene in Wales." Gadael yr Ugeninfed Ganrif was developed as part of Sherman Cymru’s Artists’ Development initiative led by the show’s director and Head of Creative Learning at Sherman Cymru, Phillip Mackenzie. Gareth comments on this working process: “Phil isn’t a Welsh speaker but after he’d played such a key role in the process of writing the play I was keen for us to continue this working relationship. I’ve also previously directed some work in Kosovo in experience. The rehearsal period has been an opportunity for Phil, who originally comes from Australia, to familiarise himself with Welsh language culture and with the historical context (the failure of the ’79 Referendum in Wales) which kick-started a really exciting period in Welsh rock. The fact that Phil is able to look at this cultural movement from the objective position of an outsider really helped me to sum up the importance of this time in Welsh history. He’s brought a lot of new ideas to the table in terms of staging the production in a really visual and powerful way.” Gadael yr Ugeinfed Ganrif can be seen at Chapter, Cardiff from 16 - 19 February at 8pm.
