SAVOY PREMIERES NEW PRODUCTION OF UNDER MILK WOOD _ LIVE ON AIR |
The Savoy Theatre in Monmouth is proud to announce that it will be staging the only performance in Wales of a new version of the Dylan Thomas classic produced by Bristol based Splice Productions. Date: February 11th Time: 7.30pm Tickets £10 Pages are lost, parts are stolen and fights break out on stage, but it's all part of an anarchic new show by Bristol-based Splice Productions. Opening at the Tobacco Factory's Brewery Theatre on January 11th, Under Milk Wood (Live on Air) takes a fresh look at Dylan Thomas's classic "play for voices". Set in a BBC radio studio, it focuses on a celebratory broadcast of the famous drama that doesn't quite go according to plan. "Think Dylan Thomas meets Round the Horne," says actor Bob Gwilym, who stars in the show and is best ??? known to TV audiences as Max from Casualty. "It's 1964, ten years since Under Milk Wood made its debut. Two actors and a talented young Foley artist on sound effects are playing all the parts. For various reasons, the broadcast descends into mayhem. The studio audience see the chaos but the performers somehow have to hide it from the listeners". Under Milk Wood (Live on Air) is the third show by Splice, which is run by Gwilym and director Kath Rogers. Their previous work includes a multi-media Macbeth at the Bristol Old Vic and SUS at the Bridewell Island. The company has built a reputation for 'splicing' live action with film, archive footage, music and now, radio. "For this piece, we're also creating a new and original physical story to run alongside the text," explains Kath. "It's affectionately irreverent but the poetry of Thomas's language still comes through. It's the same with Shakespeare. If you put it in another context, it brings out things you didn't realise were in there. Our set-up and framing is imposed, but because the language of 'UMW' is so full of soul and heart and about the human condition and lost love, it prevails and becomes even more heightened. And when the line between actors and characters starts to blur, and they reveal their own human shortcomings, it becomes all the more poignant. Under Milk Wood was written as a play for radio and later adapted for stage and film. Set in the imaginary Welsh village of Llareggub, it brings to life the locals' innermost thoughts as they go about their daily lives. "This is the company's first tour and we're really looking forward to taking our work across the country and in particular to performing in Monmouth," adds Bob.
