The Drama Association of Wales is pleased to announce that their Theatre Summer School will take place at the University of Wales, Newport - Caerleon Campus from Saturday 13th August to Friday 19th August 2011.This year DAW will be offering two courses to choose from: Those booking on to Course 1 will spend a day or two on each of several subjects throughout the week offering a taste of a variety of disciplines. RSC ON BOARD The Association can now confirm that it is working in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company as part of the Open Stages project and Course 1 will include two days or workshops lead by RSC practitioners! Non academic, practical and physical, the sessions will cover voice, movement, text and direction, putting the emphasis on exercises and activities that unlock the text and the actor’s ability to perform it. DAW Administrator, Gary Thomas commented, “We’re thrilled to be working with the RSC and involving Summer School as part of the Open Stages project. Shakespeare has proved a popular subject when offered on our summer courses in the past, so when we had the opportunity to work with the RSC to offer training to non-professionals we jumped at the chance.” He continued, “We’re also exploring, Make Up, Stage Combat and Alexander Technique as other subjects for those who wish to cover several themes in the week.” For those wishing to cover a single subject in greater depth throughout the week, DAW is also offering Course 2 which meets these needs. DAW are currently in discussion with someone who is both well known and well respected on the theatre scene in Wales and hope to make an announcement soon. MORE AFFORDABLE For this first time DAW will be offering a day student rate to those living within easy travelling distance of the course venue and there is also a new option to spread course fee payments over a period of several months. Gary said, “We realise that people are finding it harder to afford things like this and we’re trying to make it as affordable as possible. We hope that by spreading the payments, attending this kind of activity is an option for more people”. Full details on the Summer Courses and booking forms will be announced soon.
