It is not always the case however, that the single woman in question can be tempted into matrimony. It just so happens that Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters are born into a society simply besotted with matrimony and a mother determined to see her daughters in holy wedlock.Cardiff University‡s drama society Act One presents Helen Jerome‡s sparkling adaptation of Pride and Prejudice: A Sentimental Comedy in Three Acts, at the YMCA this February. Directed by Cardiff students, Kirsty Allen and Sophie Brown, the production celebrates spirited lead Elizabeth Bennett, played by Jessica Wretlind, as she navigates her way around the 19th century mating game, with the help and hindrance of the delightful Bennett family. Pride and prejudice will eventually meet halfway after an evening of sparring between Elizabeth and the formidable Mr Darcy. It is not simply a case of empire necklines that will capture the audience's imagination but the portrayal of a heroine beyond her time; a character that has finally come into her own century to be celebrated in this adaptation. This is a full length and fabulous, traditional production of one of English literature‡s best loved novels by an award winning drama society and a delightful way to spend an evening curled up with Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is being performed at the YMCA Theatre, Cardiff from Monday 7th February-Friday 11th February.
