Welsh Theatre Symposium - What is the future for theatre in Wales? |
14 March 201110:30 – 16:30 Theatr Brycheiniog Canal Wharf Brecon Powys LD3 7EW Hosted and produced by The Theatres Trust, Creu Cymru, and the Wales Association for the Performing Arts Chaired by Theatre Director, Phil Clark The Welsh Theatre Symposium is an opportunity for theatre makers, theatre companies, producers, local authority and independent theatre, arts centre and venue operators, arts development officers, theatre marketing professionals and architects and those involved in theatre capital projects to meet and discuss the current and future state of theatre and theatre venues in Wales today. Using Open Space, the day has been designed to provide a place for the theatre sector to consider the question: What is the future for theatre in Wales? With much transition and change in the theatre scene we aim to identify, explore and address the most important issues, gather new ideas, resources and people, consider visions, themes, priorities, and next steps in order to answer this question. The symposium will be an opportunity to discuss the recommendations in the report on ‘The Accessibility of Arts and Cultural Activities in Wales’ published in February by the National Assembly for Wales, Communities and Culture Committee, new funding arrangements being established by Arts Council Wales and the way local authorities will be delivering theatre and arts development and operating their venues. The following speakers will provide opening provocations to stimulate ideas and ways forward: Martin Sutherland, Chief Executive, Royal & Derngate, Northampton will speak on the way in which the venue has developed new partnerships and become politically engaged at neighbourhood and local authority levels to demonstrate its value in the community and local economy, and in so doing build a more financially secure future. Andrew Davies, AM, Welsh Assembly Member for Swansea West in the Welsh Assembly will offer his thoughts on the changing national and local political landscape in Wales in relation to the impact this is having on ensuring future access to theatre across Wales. Jonathan Petherbridge, Creative Director, London Bubble Theatre Company will speak on the new model the company adopted when its Arts Council England funding ceased in 2008. How the company negotiated change, downsized and got lucky - and as a result how the bubble has developed deeper relationships with its audiences and brought on new funders as financial investors and creative supporters. The afternoon will run as Open Space, facilitated by Lucy Foster of Improbable Theatre which runs the annual Devoted and Disgruntled event, giving anyone who attends the chance to propose a starting point for discussion, lead a discussion, take part in one of the conversations or move between them all. Open Space gives you the opportunity to talk about what angers you, what inspires you, what you are passionate about, and what action you’d like to see. You might want to look at the way theatre makers and venues might work together and share resources, collaborate artistically and behind the scenes; the new relationships between venues and their communities and theatre makers; if there are new models for venues as cultural producers and community hubs, and the future role of local authorities faced with reduced budgets.
