SPRING AWAKENING

SPRING AWAKENING A hard-hitting controversial tale of sexual tensions and teenage promiscuity will form the basis of an award-winning rock musical that will tour Wales for the first time next month.

Set in late Nineteenth Century Germany ‘Deffro’r Gwanwyn’, a Welsh language translation of the award winning musical ‘Spring Awakening’, concerns young girls and boys experiencing puberty and discovering their own emotions in the shadow, and in spite of, narrow-minded elders and social taboos.

“Frank Widekind’s original play was banned for a while due to its explicit content,” said Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru – the Welsh National Theatr Company’s Marketing Officer, Elin Williams.
“Based on the play the musical written by Steven Slater with music by Duncan Sheik has been an overwhelming success since first staged in New York’s Broadway in 2006 and has been translated into Welsh by Dafydd James.”

‘Deffro’r Gwanwyn’ is directed by Elen Bowman and the 13–member cast include experienced stage and television actors, Ffion Dafis and Dyfed Thomas, who play the strict and uncompassionate grown-ups. The teenagers at their mercy are played by Zoë George, Owain Gwynn, Iddon Jones, Daniel Lloyd, Elain Lloyd, Ellen Ceri Lloyd, Elin Llwyd, Berwyn Pierce, Aled Pedrick, Lynwen Haf Roberts and Meilir Rhys Williams. The musical director is Dyfan Jones.

“This is undoubtedly a production mainly for young audiences but its themes will strike a note with people of all ages,” added Elin Williams.
“With a live rock band in accompaniment it is an unforgettable stage experience.”
