Three characters. Two days. One house.

Marking exactly twenty years on from the original workshop performance of Ariel Dorfman’s political thriller ‘Death and the Maiden’ the South Wales Theatre Collective visits Chapter Arts Centre with this modern classic.

Timely indeed, when considering that the world is witnessing an overthrowing of regimes in places such as Egypt and Libya.

Written in 1991 by Ariel Dorfman Death and the Maiden is a moral thriller set in a country recently returning to democracy after a military regime. A woman, Paulina, believes that a stranger who comes to her home is the doctor who, under a military dictatorship, tortured and raped her many years before. Seizing the moment she decides to take justice into her own hands, and seeks to hold court in her own home. Desperate to gain a confession from this man what ensues is a tense cat-and-mouse style thriller that leads to a dramatic conclusion.

The Collective was set up in 2007 with a vision to present engaging pieces of thought-provoking and entertaining performance using performers trained and/or based in Wales, working alongside new or recent graduates of technical, design and stage management courses. This production is supported by recent RWCMD graduates Jess Scott (Stage Design), Sara Shardlow (Stage Management) and Anna Eveleigh (Lighting).

In support of its ongoing campaigns across the world the collective will be donating £1 from every ticket sold to Amnesty International Wales.
