This Spring, Sherman Cymru will present Ian Rowlands’s new play Desire Lines at Chapter 8 – 23 April prior to a three week tour of Wales.Wryly funny and heartfelt, Desire Lines is a lyrical portrayal of the seven ages of man told through the journey of one man around Wales. The piece traces the pulls and pushes that lead and drive us through life and asks, how do we decide on a place to call home and if we could live it all again, what would we change? It is also a metaphor for Wales at this point in time, as writer Ian Rowlands explains: “Without the Assembly and the route towards the recent Referendum, this play would not have been written. It’s a play about a nation journeying away from its old ways of seeing towards a new vision of itself.” Desire Lines is directed by Russian born Irina Brown, an internationally acclaimed stage director who is former Artistic Director of the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. Irina comments: “I love this play because it deals with both visible and invisible journeys we undertake in pursuit of our dreams and desires. I love the poetry of Ian's language as well as its visceral penetrating beauty, its wit, the freedom of his imagination. I love being privy to the hidden worlds of people's hidden thoughts, being allowed behind the facade. The questions of national identity, of leaving one's home, or of going back inevitably reverberate with me as someone who had to make a choice to leave her own country all those years ago. I am thrilled to be working on this piece within the strong and passionate creative community of Sherman Cymru.” Sherman Cymru’s theatre in Cardiff is currently closed to the public to undergo an extensive refurbishment. The closure period has meant the company has worked in different spaces and venues in Cardiff as well as maintaining their touring work and creative learning and artist development activity. Amy Hodge, Associate Director of Sherman Cymru comments: “It seems very apt that one of the highlights of our time out of the building is a play about a journey round Wales that culminates in a return home. Desire Lines is completely anchored in Wales and reflects the current spirit and preoccupations of the nation both politically and emotionally. Everything about producing this particular play at this particular time seems right.” Desire Lines will be performed at Chapter 8 - 23 April. Tickets are £12/ £10 (Previews: 8 – 11 April £10/£8) and can be booked from Chapter’s Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or online at www.chapter.org |
