ARTS COUNCIL OF WALES WELCOMES ASSEMBLY GO-AHEAD FOR MILLENNIUM CENTRE

The Arts Council of Wales today warmly welcomed the National Assembly’s decision to give the go-ahead to the development of an ambitious multi-million pound arts centre in Cardiff.

The Wales Millennium Centre, to be situated in Cardiff Bay, will benefit from £10 million of funding from ACW, which constitutes 9.6% of the project’s overall cost.

The award, a Lottery Capital Grant, is the largest ever made in Wales and will enable the provision of accommodation for a number of Wales’s leading cultural bodies. Diversions Dance Company, Hijinx Theatre, Academi, The Touch Trust, Welsh National Opera, Urdd Gobaith Cymru and Tŷ Cerdd will all benefit through rehearsal and performance space, storage and office accommodation provided by the grant.

Sybil Crouch, chair of ACW says: “We are delighted with the Assembly’s decision to take forward this important development for the arts in Wales. The new centre will provide a world class showcase for Welsh talent across a range of art forms, and will provide widespread access to the arts and to arts education opportunities. It will provide a focus for cultural tourism, and will help establish Wales as a centre of excellence for a variety of art forms. The £9.8 million grant is only one example of how ACW is funding major capital ventures across Wales in 2002, the total funding of which comes to £27 million. These include ventures in Caernarfon, Harlech, Cardigan, Wrexham, and Newport among others, and reinforce ACW’s commitment to arts funding and development across the whole of Wales.”
