Sherman Cymru present third festival of new writing and new voices |
This April, Sherman Cymru will present the third Egin:Springboard, a bilingual festival celebrating the company’s commitment to discovering, developing and nurturing new writing and new voices from around Wales. The five day programme is made up of various showings of work from a whole host of emerging and established writers and artists. One of the highlights is Light Arrested Between the Curtain and the Glass, a play about guilt, faith and devotion by 22 year old playwright Brad Birch. Brad has progressed from Sherman Cymru’s Writers’ Group through to the Advanced Writers’ Programme and , and Light Arrested… represents the first ever RAW production. Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director Amy Hodge who will direct Light Arrested… explains: “With a scheduled three RAW productions this year, we are increasing significantly our output of new plays. We want to get as much great new work as we can out there and in front of an audience in a way that isn’t possible with all the demands of a full-scale production, but still with a professional cast and a Sherman Cymru commitment to quality. Put bluntly, it’s no frills theatre - the writing itself will be the main event with things like set and lighting design really stripped back. Light Arrested… is the perfect piece to be the first RAW production – Brad is a real success story of Sherman Cymru’s writer development programme and it will be a pleasure to direct his first professional production.” Other events in the Egin:Springboard programme include: Actoresau yn...dweud storïau / Actorion yn...dweud storïau, a Welsh-language performance piece by Sera Moore Williams exploring the stories men and women tell each other and how they tell them; various rehearsed readings of plays currently in development; a selection of work and presentations from individuals and companies that have been supported by Sherman Cymru’s Artists’ Development initiative; and an interactive, bilingual discussion in partnership with National Theatre Wales and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru on creating and presenting new work. Egin:Springboard is the last project Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director Arwel Gruffydd will be working on before he takes up his new post as Artistic Director of Theatr Genedaethol Cymru. Arwel comments: “Egin:Springboard for me epitomises what’s best about Sherman Cymru - a commitment to discovering the next generation of writers and theatre makers, nurturing the development of new work and giving artists a platform to try out their material and room to explore. On this front line of theatre making and in other areas of mutual interest, I’m very much looking forward to future collaborations between Sherman Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.” Egin: Springboard will be on at Chapter 17 - 21 April.
