Written and Performed by Tayo AlukoWith Michael Conliffe, Piano Directed by Olusola Oyeleye Designed by Phil Newman “In Wales, I first understood the struggle of Negro and white together” Paul Robeson Tayo Aluko delivers a fantastic performance as he stars in this dramatic one-man tour de force that tells the story of the great Paul Robeson – the famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner who had a very special connection with Wales. Call Mr Robeson, which is produced in association with Theatr Mwldan, visits Cardigan on 1st May, and will tour to six Welsh venues throughout April and May 2011. Tayo, who has sung as baritone soloist with the Hallé Orchestra, brings one of the 20th Century’s most impressive but overlooked figures back to life in this powerful, compelling performance. The play is a roller coaster journey through Robeson's remarkable and eventful life – his singing and acting triumphs, and the equally important development of his radical activism which challenged the political establishment at its very core, and caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. As Robeson’s career takes off, he also becomes too radical and outspoken for his government’s liking, is branded a traitor to his country and is harassed and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career. Call Mr Robeson features some of the great man’s most famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol' Man River, and a spectacularly defiant testimony to the Senate House Un-American Activities Committee. Tayo Aluko is accompanied on piano by Michael Conliffe.
