Oh What a Lovely War

Oh What a Lovely War Aberystwyth Arts Centre Youth and Community Theatre have once again joined forces to bring Joan Littlewood's poignant war time musical entertainment 'Oh What A Lovely War' to the Arts Centre Theatre from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st May at 7.30pm.

Over forty local people are involved in bringing this theatrical chronicle of the horrors of the Frist World War to life through songs and documents of the period. First performed in 1963 at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, London, it was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.

Focussing on the events of the First World War, the decisions made by the leaders of the day, and the desperation of the soldiers in the front line, the musical entertainment ingeniously juxtaposes comedy with the true tragedy of the War - thus highlighting the appaling nature of the battlefield, the stupidity of the commanding officers, and the devastation that swept across Europe in the 'war to end all wars'. Through popular songs such as 'Goodbye-ee', 'Pack Up Your Troubles' and 'Make A Man Of You', Joan Littlewood and her Theatre Workshop created a work which has a timeless relevance to war within the world, and the recurrent themes are as relevant today as they have ever been.

The community theatre programme at the Arts Centre is as popular as ever, with one of our largest casts to date performing on Aberystwyth's main stage. It is a pleasure that the Arts Centre's unique facilities are being utilised in this way for community provision.

Director Richard Hull is joined once again by the team that brought the Christmas production of 'The Wizard of Oz' to the stage last December - Choreographer Rachel West and Musical Director Ric Lloyd - and this production promises to be a entertaining yet thought provoking evening for our audiences.
