Recipient of an Arts Council Wales Creative Wales Award for 2011, Philip Ralph – award winning writer of Deep Cut* and associate artist with Swansea’s Volcano Theatre Company – will present a series of totally improvised, unscripted spoken word performances in Swansea and Cardiff in May and June 2011. Working in spaces that have never been performed in before, the aim is to explore if it is possible for the worlds of stand-up comedy, performance art and theatre to collide to create something totally unique – a forum for people to share and vent their deepest fears, worries, joys, hates and loves through the medium of a performer. Each performance of The One Eyed Man Project will be unique and will take as its source material the events of the day just gone – not just in the wider world, but in the lives of the performers and audience. Phil comments: “Lately we have never seemed to be so close together and yet so far apart as people. So, this project is an experiment to see if it is possible to offer performances that work specifically for the group of people in the audience at that time - and which speaks directly and specifically to their concerns, worries, fears and needs. As a performer, one always works for the audience but never more clearly than in this case. I’m trying to have a conversation – as all performers are – and the experiment is reliant upon the raw materials of performer and audience meeting together in a space. “ One element of The One Eyed Man Project is its online presence before, during and after the performances themselves. The project’s blogspot can be found at http://manoneeye.blogspot.com where Phil will be blogging about his research and preparation and he can also be found on Facebook (The One Eyed Man Project) and Twitter (@manoneeye) where he will be asking for input and feedback on the project. This is a unique opportunity to participate in a fascinating experiment in performance. The One Eyed Man Project will be in Swansea 18-20 May in Noah’s Yard, Uplands; 1-3 June in the Civic Centre Foyer, Oystermouth Road and 15-17 June in the Junction Café, Blackpill. There will be two performances on each day at 7pm and 8.30pm. Tickets for Swansea dates are priced at £3 and are available from Taliesin Arts Centre Box Office on 01792 602060. The One Eyed Man Project will be in Cardiff 25-27 May in The Plan Café, Morgan Arcade; 8-10 June in The Old Library, the Hayes; and 22-24 June in a venue yet to be confirmed. There will be two performances on each day at 7pm and 8.30pm. Tickets for Cardiff dates are priced at £3 (except The Old Library dates where tickets are free but a suggested donation of £3 towards costs can be paid on the night) and are available from Sherman Cymru Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or by visiting www.shermancymru.co.uk * Produced in 2008 by Sherman Cymru and recipient of Fringe First, Amnesty International Freedom of Expression and Herald Angel awards |
