Dragon LNG has teamed up with Milford Haven’s Torch Theatre in extending opportunities to young people to share in the experience of a series of summer dance workshops and to perform on stage alongside members of a professional dance company.“BREAKOUT! 2011 follows on from a successful project piloted by the Torch with JooNDance Company two years ago…” explained the Torch’s Artistic Director, Peter Doran “…but sadly, despite involving over 400 children and young people across Pembrokeshire and a great deal of positive feedback from teachers, participants and parents, sufficient funding could not be found to run it again last year. It’s wonderful that Dragon LNG have stepped forward - and with the support from Pembrokeshire County Council and Arts Care Gofal Celf this project can continue – and hopefully set a precedent for years to come.” Offering schools across the County free high energy dance workshops during the summer term JooN’s dancer-teachers will be giving young people in Pembrokeshire the chance to try out their funky style, fusing contemporary, breaking and capoeira techniques - showing young people that dance can be accessible, enjoyable and worthwhile. Young people between the ages of 7 to 18 then have another chance to dive head first into dance for a week-long Summer School at the Torch, spending the week working with the JooNDancers, learning their moves and creating their own dance piece. The piéce de resistance will be at the beginning of August with three jam packed performances of inventive, high energy dance featuring three unique showcase pieces as both of the BREAKOUT! Summer School teams show off their new found skills alongside the professionals on the Torch stage. “Our Dragon LNG Community Support Programme is focused on giving young people the chance to develop new skills and we were delighted to support this exciting project” said Wendy Goldsworthy of Dragon LNG, “…The youngsters in our County have so much enthusiasm and talent that combined with the skills of the Torch Theatre staff and Zosia and her team, the performances on the Torch stage in August will be spectacular. I will be booking my seat now! “ Auditions for JooNDance’s summer team took place at the end of May with an interesting mix of applications from contemporary, ballet and break-dancers and fifteen male dancers. “It proves that dance definitely isn’t just for girls!” said Artistic Director Zosia Dowmunt. The new team will be made up of Kim Noble - an original JooNDancer who recently toured Pembrokeshire with Bombastic; contemporary dancer Daniel (Didge) Ovel who has danced for 2faced; Harnish Lacey and Dirty Feet; Jason Boyle who is coming to the end of his training at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, and Zosia herself. The summer school workshops are divided into primary and secondary school sessions during the first week of August and cost just £60.00 for the whole week. However ‘the dream team’ don’t want a lack of money to hold anyone back – so they are offering a Low Income Family Supplement of £25.00 against ten places. Participants need not have any prior dance experience. To obtain full details of BREAKOUT 2011! call Karen or Lesley on 01646 694192 or visit the Torch website at www.torchtheatre.co.uk. |
