ARTS COUNCIL OF WALES RECEIVES FUNDING INCREASE FROM NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR WALES

The Arts Council of Wales today unveiled its three-pronged arts funding strategy following the significant budgetary increase awarded to the Arts by the Welsh Assembly Government.

The arts in Wales have benefited from a 23% increase in Assembly funding for the financial year 2002-2003, a major and very welcome increase in funding in comparison to spending in previous years.

ACW Chief Executive Peter Tyndall says: “This exceptionally welcome increase in funding forms a solid base for the future well-being of the Arts in Wales. I am pleased therefore to announce that the Arts Council of Wales is immediately set to implement a three-pronged approach to the distribution of the funding.

“Our first priority is to redress the economic shortfall experienced latterly by the Arts sector as a result of years of standstill funding. We are committed to ensuring that quality becomes a recognised cornerstone of the Arts in this country once again.

“The majority of our revenue clients will therefore receive a 15% increase in their annual revenue funding to help them to secure their futures and to achieve real improvements in quality.” he said.

“Secondly, we will be making a good start on redressing historical anomalies

“The third element of the strategy will be to implement the Arts Council’s established strategic priorities, which have been identified in the course of a comprehensive consultation process. These include:
- Increased funding for community arts projects
- The Youth Arts Fund
- Creative Industries
- Dance

Jenny Randerson, Minister for Culture, Sport and the Welsh Language says: “The Arts Council has a key part to play in delivering the Culture Strategy and this budget announcement marks a substantial step forward in securing the arts in Wales and building for the future.”
