Welsh actor Matthew Rhys makes a flying visit home to support local theatre Welsh actor Matthew Rhys made a special visit to his home town of Cardiff last Thursday to support Sherman Cymru’s Redevelopment Campaign.

The special event was organised to help raise funds for Sherman Cymru’s redevelopment of the theatre. On Thursday 16 June, 70 people were treated to an intimate evening with the Hollywood star, Matthew Rhys, in return for their support of the theatre’s campaign.

Matthew said, “My first memory and experience of going to the theatre was at the Sherman so the place means a lot to me. Trying to find the time to come back to Wales from LA between my busy filming schedule is really challenging, but I was glad to have been able to come back and support Sherman Cymru’s Redevelopment Campaign at this special evening at the Kuku Club.”

Held at the new Kuku Club, part of the Park Plaza Hotel, Cardiff, the audience got to ask questions and find out more about the actor, who’s known for his performances in Very Annie Mary, The Edge of Love and more recently US hit series Brothers & Sisters and Welsh film, Patagonia.

Matthew talked about his life in LA, shared stories and anecdotes about his childhood growing up in Cardiff, his early memories of visiting the Sherman Theatre and performing himself in school productions. Matthew also recalled memories of living in London with his close friend, Ioan Gruffudd, and at the beginnings of their careers, receiving answer phone messages from Glenn Close and Kathleen Turner.

Matthew, who is Patron of Sherman Cymru’s Redevelopment Campaign said, “It was great to come back for this event and see some old and new friends. The Sherman has played a large role in my choice of career. Having the opportunity to see professional theatre as a youngster in Cardiff developed my interest as a young actor. With a new fit for purpose venue, Sherman Cymru can continue inspiring young people, community groups and producing award-winning theatre. Its role is vital in showcasing Welsh talent and developing culture in Cardiff and Wales.”

Emma Goad, Head of Development at Sherman Cymru said:
“We’ve had a fantastic evening and we appreciate the support and time Matthew has taken out of his busy schedule to be with us. We are so pleased so many Matthew fans have been able to support this event and make it a memorable evening as well as supporting our campaign. We look forward to welcoming our supporters and Matthew in back into our new building in early 2012.”
