NORTH WALES WOODS TO ENCHANT YOUNG IMAGINATIONS WITH THEATRE PERFORMANCE |
Theatre company Cwmni’r Frân Wen is venturing into the forest this July to present a public performance of its new production Swyn y Coed-The Enchanted Forest. Abergwyngregyn Woods, Conwy (Sat 2 July), Newborough Forest, Newborough (Thur 21 July) and Glynllifon Park, Caernarfon (Fri 22 July) will play host to this enchanting outdoor theatre experience for families and children aged 7 years+. The show is being supported by the Forestry Education Initiative, coinciding with the United Nations International Year of the Forest, and is set to be a unique and magical theatre experience, looking to ignite young people’s imagination. Kim Burnham of Forestry Education Initiative said, "The aim is for children to be taken away from the classroom and TV environment and take advantage of the beauty and excitement of the outdoors, encouraging them to use their imaginations. Taking children out of the indoors environment means they can experience nature close-up, but using theatre to bring these experiences to life is something new and exciting.” The production is made up of Welsh actors Emyr Gibson, Elen Gwynne, Huw Ll_r and Manon Vaughan Wilkinson. Menai Bridge-based Emyr Gibson, best known for his role in S4C's ‘Rownd a Rownd’ adds: “The story is based on the Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed tale from the Mabinogion and tells of the courting and marriage of Pwyll and Rhiannon and of the birth and disappearance of their son Pryderi. Performing theatre in the open air is a fantastic and exhilarating experience. Being so close to the audience makes it a much more intimate and engaging experience, the children looked amazed at times.” Continues fellow actor Huw Ll_r: “The weather, trees, branches, planes, birds – these are an everyday part of performing in a forest, so keeping audiences focused is a big part of the challenge. It's even more challenging because it's a moving performance and we have to play the drums. Before the first performance I was particularly nervous, it’s much easier on stage because you are aware of your surroundings and how the sound will travel. The production’s artistic director Iola Ynyr said: “Swyn y Coed fits in with Cwmni’r Frân Wen’s aim of creating innovative and experimental productions and to push the boundaries of theatre for children in Wales and we’re all looking forward to our visits to these wonderful forests.” Cwmni’r Fran Wen’s artistic team devised the theatrical experience with inspiration from Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy children. The performance is suitable for families and children aged 7 years+, children must be accompanied by an adult.
