Newport Playgoers Seek New Playwrights for Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages Project |
Newport Playgoers Society (NPS) is launching a competition to find 21st Century Shakespeares after being accepted to take part in the UK’s biggest amateur theatre project, RSC Open Stages, which is being co-ordinated by the world famous Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).“We are extremely pleased to have been invited to take part in this very exciting project,” said Playgoers President, Bruce Campbell. “We join hundreds of amateur theatre companies from all over the UK who will be preparing a new and innovative take on Shakespeare - beginning a journey that could lead to some companies performing at the World Shakespeare Festival in Stratford in next year. “Following the huge success of our Ryder Cup inspired play-writing festival, we are holding another one act play-writing competition – entitled ‘No Holds Bard’ - on a Shakespeare-related theme. The best plays will be produced on the main stage of the 400-seat Dolman Theatre in March 2012. A number of productions from across the UK will be invited to perform at the World Shakespeare Festival in Stratford in 2012, alongside professional Shakespeare productions at the RSC – and it would be an amazing experience if we were chosen to be part of that,” he added. Ian Wainwright, RSC Project manager for Open Stages, said; “We are really surprised and delighted by the extent of applications from all corners of the UK from village halls to ruined castles, from community centres to disused swimming pools the innovation, commitment and ambition of the entries so far is incredible. Some of the amateur companies involved have a great tradition of performing Shakespeare dating back before the founding of RSC. Others are using the project as an opportunity to try performing Shakespeare for the first time.” Nine regional theatres are involved and, as well as running a programme of skills-sharing events, will each showcase their own RSC branded Shakespeare themed productions. Open Stages will culminate in a national celebration of amateur Shakespeare when a selection of participants will be invited to perform their productions at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, performing alongside the Company’s own festival productions and those from theatre companies from around the world.
