Up and coming local ballet dancers get a taste for life as a professional in Coppélia at the New Theatre, Cardiff

Up and coming local ballet dancers get a taste for life as a professional in Coppélia at the New Theatre, Cardiff Over 100 local Cardiff dancers are set to experience life as a professional ballet dancer as they have the opportunity to perform alongside internationally known principal dancers in English Youth Ballet’s production of the classic ballet Coppélia at the New Theatre, Cardiff on Friday 29 & Saturday 30 July.

Back in February this year the New Theatre hosted auditions for over 160 young dancers as they tried out for parts in Coppélia. A competitive and exciting process, 100 young male and female dancers from the area were selected and offered roles in the ballet. The dancers are now rehearsing for the production at studios in Fitzalan High School in Cardiff.

Some of the successful local talent includes Holly Vallis from Newport who is playing one of the main characters, the Coppélia doll. She is joined by Kellie Jones, also from Newport, Alice Cornes and Olivia Miles Upcott, both from Cardiff, all of whom play friends of Swanhilda.

Amongst the principal dancers are Julieanne Rice-Oxley, a former dancer with the National Ballet of Portugal who is joined by Trevor Wood and Lorien Slaughter, both former dancers with the English National Ballet, Emma Lister, Brenden Bratulic and Amy Drew.

Choreographed by English Youth Ballet’s Artistic Director Janet Lewis and Dominic Marshall, this charming, witty and sparkling ballet follows the escapades of the dreamy Franz, who falls in love with a beautiful life-size doll, Coppélia, created by eccentric and mysterious inventor, Dr Coppelius. Franz’s jealous lover Swanhilda discovers this and embarks on an adventure to confront her rival.

A classic musical score composed by Léo Delibes and attractive and colourful choreography makes Coppélia a firm family favourite worldwide.

English Youth Ballet is one of the country’s largest ballet companies, bringing together the finest professional principal dancers and young ballet students who are selected for their talent and potential.
