This Autumn 5,000 young people and community audiences will see a unique theatre experience. ‘The Sinking of the Arandora Star’ tells the story of Italian families living in South Wales during the Second World War. It follows the tragic tale of the 446 men who lost their lives being interned on the ship ‘The Arandora Star’ when, mistaken for a troop ship, was torpedoed by a German U-boat. The play follows the true story of Lina, who witnesses her father being arrested and dragged from their cafe in the Welsh Valleys and her subsequent quest for the truth. Written for young people and performed at The Dylan Thomas Theatre in Swansea, this annual residency is much in demand from schools and community groups. The day long project not only gives young people the opportunity to see the best of Welsh theatre but also to participate in activities at the Swansea Museum and at the National Waterfront museum. Lucy Saunders a teacher at Plasmarl Junior in Swansea managed to book one of the last available slots for her pupils was very relieved because “ it’s the best thing we do with the kids all year” and she was desperate for them not to miss out. Geinor Styles, artistic director of Theatr na n'Óg explained "It has always been a popular project, this years record advance sales is testimony to the quality of the work created by the Company for nearly 30 years.
