WALES’S TOP YOUNG DANCERS TAKE TO STAGE WITH EXCITING CONTEMPORARY DANCE PERFORMANCE

WALES’S TOP YOUNG DANCERS TAKE TO STAGE WITH EXCITING CONTEMPORARY DANCE PERFORMANCE

Forty of Wales’s most talented young dancers will take to the stage of Cardiff’s New Theatre this August with an exciting and fresh programme of contemporary dance.

summerdance 2011 takes place on Saturday 6th August 2011 and is a one-off performance from young people aged between 14 and 24. The performance is the culmination of a project run in partnership by National Dance Company Wales, A2 Arts Active and Welsh National Opera.

Members of NDCWales Associates scheme – a formal training programme for aspiring young professional dancers – will perform an excerpt from By Singing Light. Created by acclaimed New York choreographer Stephen Petronio for National Dance Company Wales, it is inspired by the poetry of Dylan Thomas. The main Company recently toured this work across the UK to great acclaim.

This will be followed by the premiere of Fair And Softly Goes Far, a new work that will be created during a week-long summer school where the 40 young dancers will be taught by dancers from NDCWales.

The performance will be accompanied by live music from Welsh National Opera Young Players, performing a specially commissioned score from Welsh composer Elfyn Jones.

This one-off performance is the culmination and celebration of a
year-round series of training and performance events for young dancers led by NDCWales in partnership with Arts Active.

NDCWales Artistic Associate Roy Campbell-Moore will be directing the performance. He said: “summerdance is always an incredibly exciting and challenging week where I’m continually impressed by the young people’s enthusiasm, talent and ideas. The performance will be a showcase not only of Wales’s future dance talent but also our talented young musicians too.”

He added that it was an excellent opportunity for young people seeking a career in dance to get themselves noticed and form links within the industry.

He said: “One of the Company’s recent apprentices is a former summerdance participant. Harriet Bone took part in 2008 and was offered an apprenticeship with us in 2010. Many other summerdance participants have gone on to gain places at top dance schools and careers in the profession so our advice to young dancers is not to underestimate the value of such an experience.”

David Baxter, Arts Active Manager, said: “Arts Active has been running the summerdance course for 15 years and we are delighted that this is our 13th year of the NDCWales partnership. This is a key element of the Arts Active programme and the summerdance performance embodies our commitment to providing experiences of quality and excellence to all our project participants.”

Rhian Hutchings, Director of Welsh National Opera’s MAX department, added: “summerdance is a template for collaborative working. National Dance Company Wales, Welsh National Opera and Arts Active are able to offer young people so much more when they work together, and all three organisations bring their individual high standards to the project. WNO MAX is fundamentally about creating experiences that excite young minds and giving them the skills they need to create their own future in the arts. summerdance definitely fills this brief.”
