‘SISTER ACT’ COMES TO WALES MILLENNIUM CENTRE IN SUMMER 2012

‘SISTER ACT’ COMES TO WALES MILLENNIUM CENTRE IN SUMMER 2012 The West End and Broadway musical ‘Sister Act’ will make its Welsh debut when it arrives at Wales Millennium Centre for a 12-day run from 24 July – 4 August 2012 as part of its first ever UK tour.

‘Sister Act’ tells the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses a murder. She is put in protective custody in a convent, where the police are certain she won't be found. In her new guise as a nun, she quickly finds solidarity amongst her fellow Sisters but falls foul of the convent’s strict Mother Superior.

At the convent, Deloris turns her attention to the off-key choir by helping the nuns find their true voices and breathing new life into the rundown neighbourhood. But the villains soon become suspicious of the convent’s latest recruit as her good work threatens to betray her true identity.

American actress and producer Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the film version of ‘Sister Act’, is behind the first ever UK tour of ‘Sister Act’, alongside Stage Entertainment.

Whoopi Goldberg said: ‘I’m excited to have the show tour the UK so even more folks experience those singing nuns. It's a great show for everyone, your kids, your granny, and the next door neighbour. I promise, you'll have a great night in the theatre. Look out Wales - the Sisters are coming.’

Tickets for Sister Act go on sale to the public at 10.00am on Friday 16 September 2011. Members of the Centre’s supporters' scheme, Promise, can get priority tickets from Friday 2 September 2011. ‘Sister Act’ features a score by Alan Menken, eight-time Oscar winner and the composer of famous songs from Disney’s movies, including ‘The Little Mermaid’; ‘Beauty & The Beast’; ‘Aladdin’; and ‘Enchanted’, with lyrics from his long-time collaborator, Glenn Slater.

The book is by the award-winning team, Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, whose writing credits include the classic television comedy ‘Cheers’, with additional book material from Douglas Carter Beane.

‘Sister Act’ opened at the London Palladium in May 2009 and went on to receive four Laurence Olivier Award nominations. Its cast album went to the top of the iTunes soundtrack chart.

The New York production opened at the Broadway Theatre in April 2011 and was nominated for five Tony Awards.

‘Sister Act’ is also running in Hamburg and future productions will open in Italy, Austria, Spain, France, Holland, South Korea, Japan and Brazil soon.

Casting will be announced shortly.
