Discover Dance, Newport’s annual dance festival is preparing to wow the city once again this September for the fourth year running, as part of Newport Festival 2011 and will take place from Friday 23 September until Saturday 1 October. The festival is set to include professional performances of many genres of dance, classes and workshops as usual, and this year, visual arts exhibitions, pop-up performances and films have been added to the programme to provide everyone with as diverse a programme as possible, with hopefully, a little something for all. Not only will there be opportunities to see top national and international dancers perform across many different areas of dance, but there will also be lots of opportunities for the public to get involved and learn some moves or show Newport the moves you already have! Newport’s very own Ballet Cymru are delighting the festival this year with their performance of Under Milk Wood at The Riverfront. Under Milk Wood is a play written by Dylan Thomas and has been transformed into a dance of words by this young, vibrant cast of dancers who are successfully pushing back the barriers of classical ballet. The company challenges its dancers to interpret some of the finest characters in literature and offers the audience the perfect way to enjoy the highest possible standard of dance and storytelling. Along with Ballet Cymru, the dance festival will include several contemporary workshops and once again the Welsh Open Championships 2011 will be at the Newport Centre, complimented with workshops in Bboy and Hip Hop from some of the world’s best – the workshops provide an exciting opportunity for dance enthusiasts or even complete newbies to learn some new techniques and improve their skills. These workshops will take place throughout the festival at The Riverfront and various other venues across the city centre. Phoenix Dance Theatre, an internationally renowned contemporary dance company will be presenting their critically acclaimed mixed programme, Declarations. The show features four diverse, entertaining dance works and sees dancers turn their way through breathtakingly fluid choreography. This year the festival will close with a Pop-Up Performance in John Frost Square – where anyone can take part in this huge scale performance.
