F.A.B. Theatre return with Welsh premiere of Gary Owen’s The Drowned World |
After their successful international tour of Ian Rowlands’ Blink in 2008, F.A.B. Theatre are back to present the Welsh premiere of Gary Owen’s award-winning play The Drowned World at Chapter in Cardiff.Winner of the Pearson Best Play Award in 2002, The Drowned World has never before been performed in Wales. Directing the piece is Steve Fisher, Artistic Director of F.A.B. Theatre and Senior Lecturer in Performance and Media at the Atrium, the University of Glamorgan’s School of Creative and Cultural Industries. Steve comments: “Gary Owen is one of Wales’ most creative and articulate writers, capable of addressing big themes and issues whilst at the same time writing in an intimate and highly personal style. I am thrilled to be able to bring The Drowned World to Wales for the first time. He has described it as his best play and it certainly presents a challenging and stimulating journey for the actors and myself. He asks difficult questions about the moral world we live in and perhaps now, as much as at any time, it is highly appropriate to be looking at the way our society is running itself and the moral choices we make every day. As we watch, on our tv screens, read about in our newspapers, city centres being ravaged by gangs of out of control citizens, violence without thought, destruction without agenda, an anger directed towards an indistinct ‘them’, towards ‘the other’, the battle between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’, we are forced to ask where we place ourselves, we are forced to ask why it is happening, we are forced to ask whose side we are on… and perhaps the answer is easy. But if the answer is easy, perhaps we are not asking the right question. I think this play asks the difficult question. I look forward to some difficult answers.” The Drowned World stars John Norton, Katy Owen, Valmai Jones and Brendan Charleson.
