A FEW SURPRISES IN TORCH THEATRE’S LATEST SEASON

A FEW SURPRISES IN TORCH THEATRE’S LATEST SEASON Milford Haven’s Torch Theatre launches another great season of entertainment this month and there are a few pleasant surprises in store which will make those darker evenings a little more bearable!

The jam packed new brochure will be landing through our letterboxes just as Director Peter Doran launches into the first week of rehearsal for the show which kicks off the season - the Torch Theatre Company’s own production of Dario Fo’s classic farce Accidental Death of an Anarchist - which also tours Wales following its run at the Torch.

A multi-talented bunch of five actor/musicians play flute, guitar and piano accordion, includes a tap-dancer and sees the welcome return of Edward Harrison who played the socially inept vet in Ayckbourn’s The Norman Conquests, was one half of the most memorable Dame duos ever in Cinderella and, more recently seen in their co-production of She Stoops to Conquer.

In the meantime the Company’s workshop team have already begun working on some of the larger complex constructions for their Christmas production, The Christmas Cuckoo’s Cooking - arguably one of the most beautiful sets that their designer Sean Crowley has ever produced for a Christmas show.

The spring sees another superb play by the Theatre’s resident company, a play which has also been snapped up by other Welsh venues after it premières at the Torch in April. Who’s Afraid of Rachel Roberts has been especially commissioned by the Torch to two very talented writers. Playwright, screenwriter, distinguished actress and Welsh BAFTA Award winner Helen Griffin and stand up comedian Dave Ainsworth have been working together for a couple of years on a unique and intriguing story of the outrageous Welsh Minister’s daughter who went on to become an award winning Hollywood actress.

Sandwiched between the Torch’s own productions is a feast of live entertainment to suit most tastes and all ages. The Theatre’s third Classical Collection offers a rare opportunity to hear world class performers in this little corner of Wales; a top notch comedy season includes Jeremy Hardy and Mike Doyle; eleven more dates have been announced for the Metropolitan Opera live transmissions from New York and the latest NTLive! season are just a few of the things to look forward to, but there are also a few surprises in store. The Theatre’s very first Burlesque variety performance is bound to create a stir, and the screening of an iconic silent movie accompanied live on stage by a six piece ensemble is still said to terrify modern audiences.

As we are all closely guarding our pennies at the moment it’s good to see that the Torch is making positive efforts to keep the cost of our entertainment as low as possible by the introduction of more money saving deals such as a Pay What You Can Night for Under 26s, a great Dance Deal and a ridiculously cheap introductory offer to those of us who have never seen a live classical concert.

Bringing their current season to a close however is a terrific Tiddly Prom - an enchanting introduction to music for 2 – 5 year olds on 17 September and on the 20th, Bred in Heaven, an hilarious comedy influenced by the iconic BBC Wales production of Grand Slam and directed by Michael Bogdanov, followed by Mid Wales Opera’s production of Madam Butterfly on the 26th – so don’t forget about these in your enthusiasm to find out what’s coming up next!
