In October, staff from Sherman Cymru will be working in Tashkent, Uzbekistan with 15 young professional Uzbekistani actors to devise a piece based on the themes in Romeo and Juliet. The performance created will be the final presentation of the International Festival ‘Theatre UZ’ on 21 October 2011. Leading the Sherman Cymru team and directing the piece will be Phillip MacKenzie, Sherman Cymru’s Head of Creative Learning. Accompanying Phillip will be Amy Hodge, Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director, and two members of Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre (SCYT) Company 4 who are also employed as tutors for SCYT, Catherine Capelin and George Goding. During the intensive 12 days of exchange, learning and creation, the artists will come together to develop themselves, build new skills, be introduced to new ways of working, build self awareness and awareness of each others culture in the process of creating a performance together. Phillip comments: “This is the first time such a collaboration has happened between theatre artists from Uzbekistan and Wales and it will be a unique learning and creation opportunity for all involved. We will be challenging and supporting each other to consider the similarities and differences of theatre artists from two vastly different cultures as we interrogate the themes in Romeo and Juliet. Ensemble theatre offers us a model of democracy – it shows how we can live together in a world as well as in the space and time that is called ‘theatre’, and hopefully this will sow the seeds of a continued cultural engagement between the two countries.” |
