Sit in an artist’s front room, play human bingo or learn how to make your own 1950’s Fascinator – Wales’s most unique arts festival is going from strength to strength. For one weekend in October, the Cardiff suburb of Roath will play host to a celebration of art in all its many forms. Now in its third year, this free festival showcases the work of emerging and established artists across all genres, whilst also giving art lovers an opportunity to participate in the arts in Roath’s galleries and other extraordinary spaces such as shops, houses and parks. One of the event organisers, visual artist Helen Clifford said: “No-where does it quite like Roath. For one small part of a city to host so much talent and art in one weekend is extraordinary and worth celebrating.” People can expect to get involved with a diverse programme of exhibitions, artist’s residencies and collaborations with community groups, workshops and performance. Houses and studios will open their doors to the public and artists from across Wales will be on hand throughout the weekend to talk to visitors about their work. Art will be available to buy from galleries and direct from artists. This year will see MadeinRoath (MiR) collaborate with two new partners: Cardiff Design Festival and Experimentica, making the programme broader and more dynamic than ever before. The weekend will include a variety of spoken word and pop, folk and rock music events to suit all tastes. Pop-up ukulele performances will inspire visitors to improve their musical skills at free workshops held at Deli Rouge. Penylan Library will host readings and workshops by local authors and poets and Room to Read, an outdoor group reading aloud event. Participation events in Roath Park and The Rec’ include human bingo, tent racing, Frisbee and football. The Rec will also play host to a carnival-making extravaganza by the children of Roath Primary School, which will be followed by a carnival procession winding through the streets from the school to the park. Roathbud, back by popular demand, the pop up arthouse cinema, is back for a third year. Milgi will host an extravaganza of events, including Is it Art or is It Rubbish?, the Arts Farty Party supper club and tactileBOSCH’s performance piece Moist. The Roath Farmers Market will play host to a multitude of events alongside the ever-popular Saturday morning food market, such as the Indoor Arts and Crafts Bazaar and pedal powered busking. MiR will be crossing boundaries, inviting the audience and participating artists to explore the, for many very familiar, locale, with fresh eyes and enquiring minds. |
