ACW REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT

On a week celebrating World Theatre Day for Children and Young People, the Arts Council of Wales, as part of the strategic priorities associated with its 5-year Arts Development Strategy, issued a statement announcing its strong commitment to the development of opportunities for young people to experience the arts on a number of levels – as participants and also as practitioners.

Part of this commitment is its continued support for and participation in the
Theatre for Young People Working Group which was set up in January 2000 to develop a way forward for Theatre for Young People in Wales. It has representation from bodies that include the eight Theatre in Education Companies and Welsh Local Government Association.

The Group commissioned an audit of the provision of theatre for young people across Wales, and the results will now form the springboard for the development of a strategy for the future. The findings, for the year 1999/2000, included 48 new productions, 2,228 performances or workshops to an audience of over 172,000 young people by the eight theatre in education companies alone.

Frances Medley, Deputy Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Wales said: “The partnership forged through the Working Group clearly signals ACW’s resolute commitment to strengthening and building on the work of the eight theatre in education companies and other practitioners working across Wales in this field.”
