National Theatre Company to Tour Translation of Spring Awakening |
Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, the Welsh language national theatre, will stage a Welsh language translation of the popular musical ‘Spring Awakening’ once again this winter, with four new cast members.Based on the controversial play ‘Spring Awakening’ by Frank Wedekind, ‘Deffro’r Gwanwyn’ tells the unforgettable story of young people in their teens who are faced with sexual repression and hormonal chaos that is told in a gritty and very honest way. The musical has been translated into Welsh by award winning playwright Dafydd James (of ‘Llwyth/Tribe fame). ‘Deffro’r Gwanwyn’ was originally staged by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in March/April 2011, the show was an instant hit with Welsh audiences with many performances a sell out. This time around, there has been 4 changes to the cast which are Victoria Pugh who will be portraying the various adults; Nia Ann, from Carmarthen who will take on the role of Ilse; Siôn Ifan, originally from Carmarthen who will play the role of Georg and Tomos Eames who will play Hanschen. Other members of the cast include Dyfed Thomas (various adults), Aled Pedrick (Melchior), Iddon Jones (Moritz), Meilir Rhys Williams (Ernst), Berwyn Pearce (Otto), Zoe George (Martha), Ellen Ceri Lloyd (Wendla), Elain Lloyd (Anna) a Elin Llwyd (Thea). This tour will also be offering some performances with English language surtitles and some matinee performances. Elen Bowman will be directing with Dyfan Jones as Musical Director. Elin Williams, Marketing Manager at Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru said: “It is great that we have the opportunity to stage such a successful show once again and we hope that the audiences will rush to buy the tickets. The response from the audience, especially the younger audiences, was incredible – even though the play itself was written in 1891, the way in which the play has been adapted into a musical is very appealing to a younger audience, and the themes are relevant now as they were back then. Deffro’r Gwanwyn will open at Y Llwyfan, College Road, Carmarthen between 09-11 November before moving on to Glaslyn Leisure Centre, Porthmadog 15-17 November; The Flash Leisure Centre Welshpool 21-22 November; Pontardawe Leisure Centre 25, 26 & 28 November and Weston Studio, WMC, Cardiff on 01-03 December 2011.
