Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru to Take Part in World Shakepeare Festival

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru to Take Part in World Shakepeare Festival One of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s future productions has been chosen to form part of the World Shakespeare Festival, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company for the London 2012 Festival – the official culture programme of the Olympic Games.
‘Y Storm’, a Welsh language translation of William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, will be performed in association with the National Eisteddfod at Wales’ leading annual festival which will be held in August 2012 at Llandow, in the Vale of Glamorgan.

In a new Welsh language translation by former National Poet of Wales, Gwyneth Lewis, and with live music, circus and magic, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru (the Welsh-language National Theatre) will bring to life this daring and remarkable classic, regarded as Shakespeare’s most ambitious play.

The creative team will include director Elen Bowman (Deffro’r Gwanwyn, The Devil Inside Him), composer Simon Allen (RNT) and movement director and choreographer Liz Ranken (Royal Shakespeare Company) .

Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru said: “The Olympics happen close to home probably only once in a lifetime, and I’m enormously pleased that a Welsh-language theatre event will play a part in this global celebration here in the UK.”

He continued: “The timeless plays of arguably the greatest poet and playwright the world has ever seen continue to be performed in almost every language under the sun and we are proud to be presenting a Welsh-language Shakespeare production in the World Shakespeare Festival. Bringing Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ to a Welsh audience, and working with Gwyneth to explore what happens when this classic tale is spoken in Welsh - under the inventive direction of Elen Bowman - will be a cultural and linguistic celebration in itself, made evenmore special by way of our collaboration with the National Eisteddfod.”

Deborah Shaw, Director, World Shakespeare Festival said: “We are delighted that Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are creating such an ambitious production for the World Shakespeare Festival, rooted in both the richly poetic Welsh language and in the visual and elemental style of contemporary Welsh theatre. It’s a great addition to the Festival programme and means that Wales is represented by both the Welsh and English-language National Theatres – a sign of the resurgence of Welsh theatre over the past couple of years”.

Ruth Mackenzie, Director London 2012 Festival said: “Thanks to Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and all our cultural stars, in the summer of 2012 the London 2012 Festival will showcase to the world our world leading cultural institutions, and demonstrate how dedicated we are at creating and celebrating world class talent”.
