Making a splash with At Swim Two Boys at Wales Millennium Centre

Making a splash with At Swim Two Boys at Wales Millennium Centre Earthfall’s sell-out production of At Swim Two Boys, based on the novel of the same name by Jamie O’Neill, will be going to the Wales Millennium Centre from 23rd-26th November. At the same time Earthfall will be running a week-long residency at the Centre with students from Cardiff Metropolitan University (formally UWIC) and Newport Film School.

Staged entirely in water, and featuring two male dancers and two musicians, At Swim Two Boys tells of the developing love between two young men at a time of huge political turmoil in Ireland and Western Europe in 1916.

First performed in 2005, and having successfully toured the UK and mainland Europe, the production was heralded as one of Earthfall’s most prolific productions.

Set in Ireland in 1916, the work juxtaposes the developing love affair between two young men coming of age, with political turmoil in Ireland and the slaughter on the Western Front – contrasting the dream of national liberation and the search for personal freedom. The production comes to life in a slowly filling lake in front of a wall of water, with episodes from the book woven together through a fusion of extreme physicality, original live music and film.

“An evocative piece that combines dance, sound and live music with archive footage…projected onto a beautifully illuminated wall of water that forms the backdrop to the young lovers' duets”
Irish Theatre Magazine, Ireland

Alongside the show Earthfall offers a range of workshops from half day’s to week long residencies, professional development to lectures and seminars, which cater for group anged 15+. The residency that Earthfall will be running at the Wales Millennium Centre will be working with the students to create a multimedia performance that will be held in the Centre on Friday 25th at 6pm.

The novel At Swim Two Boys was written by Jamie O’Neill and this production is directed by Jim Ennis and Jessica Cohen, with music composed by Frank Naughton and Sion Orgon. Featuring dynamic dance, original live music, projection, live film and image, the show is touring the UK this autumn and next spring.
