Aishling Howard, 3rd-year Acting student at Welsh College of Music and Drama (WCMD) has been selected as a member of Academy - a new company being formed by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Based in Stratford-upon-Avon, it will be a permanent feature of RSC’s activity and one of its core functions will be the development and training of drama students in classical theatre. To launch the Academy, a new company called Academy Company 2002 is being created for 16 students to train and perform under the direction of Declan Donnellan. Starting in July 2002, the successful applicants will be rehearsed and taught over an intensive 10-week training period at the RSC. The Academy Company 2002's work will culminate in a Shakepeare production which will join the RSC repertoire in the Swan Theatre during September and October 2002. Each actor will be on an RSC/Equity play as cast contract for the whole period. To be eligible, students must be graduating from a full-time professional drama course at the end of this current academic year (2001/2002). Dave Bond, Head of Drama at WCMD said “We're very pleased for Aishling, who has worked extremely hard throughout her training and is a fine representative of the acting programme. We are also heartened by the fact that WCMD had the greatest number of shortlisted students from any drama school, which bears out the strength in depth of leaving students”. Aishling Howard grew up in Northamptonshire, Devon and Dorset. She always like acting, but never had the confidence to do anything about it. Having gained some experience with Salisbury Playhouse’s Youth Theatre (Stage 65), Aishling applied to WCMD to study Acting and was immediately accepted. She says “I have had a great time here - and was privileged to represent the College at the William Poel Memorial Festival at the Globe last year. Now I’m planning to enjoy my last few months here, and look forward to joining the RSC Academy in July”. |
