An international programme of bold and exciting dance Ohad Naharin, B/olero & Black Milk Itzik Galili, The Grammar of Silence Eleesha Drennan, Phantoms of Us National Dance Company Wales presents the work of world-class choreographers with 12 international dancers in a programme of spectacle, dynamism and profound emotional expression. Ohad Naharin, one of the world’s great choreographers, presents B/olero & Black Milk. B/olero is an austere work for two females, a sharply cut piece where the dancers interact both in perfect harmony and chaotic competition. Black Milk for five male dancers is full of tribal imagery, though the elegant and lyrical phrasing of the dance tempers male aggression with counterbalancing sophistication. Naharin’s work has its own dance movement language called Gaga, which uses pure dance vocabulary to initiate movement and organic flows of energy. Internationally-renowned choreographer Itzik Galili presents a highlight of NDCWales’ 2012 repertory with his third new production for the Company. The Grammar of Silence continues the powerful journey of his arresting work Exile Within. Exploring the intimate poetry of words left unsaid, Galili’s work will push Company dancers to their limits and enthral audiences. An Olivier Award nominee, Galili also makes work regularly for Rambert Dance Company, English National Ballet and Netherlands Dance Theatre. Company choreographer Eleesha Drennan and Wales-based artist Sue Williams present Phantoms Of Us for eight dancers in a poetic work of intensity and physical demand. The skin-tight, body-coloured costumes give bodily form to androgynous beings who reach out beyond superficial identity to strip away layers of human vulnerability and search for individuality. The tour opens on 26 January, 2012 at the Wales Millennium Centre’s Donald Gordon Theatre. The Company will then take to the road with dates across Wales, England, Jersey and Ireland. A special event during the tour will be at British Dance Edition 2012 when the Company performs By Singing Light by Stephen Petronio accompanied by BBC National Chorus of Wales at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre. Following the current spring tour a highlight of the year will be a new commission from world-renowned choreographer Christopher Bruce for Dance GB when National Dance Company Wales joins with Scottish Ballet and English National Ballet in a celebration of dance inspired by the 2012 London Olympics. Dance GB will perform in Glasgow, Cardiff and London in the summer.
