Spring 2012 season at the New Theatre Cardiff announced Springing into action and opening the season in spectacular style are the acrobats in the latest show from The Moscow State Circus from Friday 3 – Sunday 5 February. Inspired by the legend of The 12 Chairs, Babushkin Sekret takes audiences on an incredible journey with some of Russia’s most talented artists who combine contemporary acts with classical circus.

There’s a treat in store for Noël Coward fans in his deliciously funny final play Star Quality from Tuesday 7 – Saturday 11 February. Starring Liza Goddard and Daniel Casey (Midsomer Murders), Coward’s famous observant satire takes us behind the scenes of a new West End production where a temperamental leading lady, a ruthless director, jaded old troupers and an innocent young playwright clash in the lead up to opening night where a battle of the egos, and hilarity, ensues!

Hollywood film and TV star Stefanie Powers is joined by Richard Johnson (RSC) and Elizabeth Carling (Goodnight Sweetheart) star in a lavish new production of the classic film On Golden Pond from Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 February. Made famous by Henry and Jane Fonda and Katharine Hepburn, this touching love story explores the relationship between an elderly couple, their daughter and their new grandson. As the summer wanes there is a realisation that time is against them but the years have been good, and perhaps there is another summer on Golden Pond to enjoy.

It’s back! The Tony award-winning hit musical Avenue Q returns to Cardiff from Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 February. Irresistibly charming and wickedly funny, Avenue Q follows the lovably hopeless characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues: love, work, relationships and, above all, just how are you supposed to pay the bills with a BA in English? Suggested age 12+

Margi Clarke (Coronation Street, Letter to Brezhnev) stars in a girly night of fun and frolics in Hormonal Housewives on Wednesday 29 February & Thursday 1 March. Audiences are taken on a riotous ride where weight gain, mood swings, wine, PMS, men, waxing, stretch marks, chocolate, upper-lip hair…and all the other joys of being a 21st Century girl are on the agenda! Suitable for adults only.

The Birds of a Feather are back! Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph aka Sharon, Tracy and Dorien reunite to bring one of TV’s most popular sitcoms to the stage from Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 March. From the producers of the highly successful stage adaptation of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies, Birds of a Feather visits the New Theatre as part of a limited UK tour. A rare opportunity to see this gem live on stage.

One of the greatest musicals of all time The King and I returns to thrill Cardiff audiences in a lavish new production from Tuesday 13 – Saturday 17 March. Starring Ramon Tikaram (Jesus Christ Superstar, Bombay Dreams) and Josefina Gabrielle (Oklahoma, Sweet Charity) this heart-warming story of the British governess brought to the court of Siam is told using one of the most beautiful scores ever written. Includes Shall We Dance and the unforgettable Getting to Know You.

The first of two Shakespeare plays this spring, Clwyd Theatr Cymru returns to the New Theatre from Tuesday 20 – Saturday 24 March with one of his most popular comedies As You Like It. This festive, funny and romantic play, that celebrates the transforming power of love, is directed by the acclaimed Director Terry Hands and stars a hugely talented cast including Christian Patterson, Robert Blythe and Ifan Huw Dafydd.

The multi award-winning An Inspector Calls comes direct from a sell out West End run from Tuesday 27 – Saturday 31 March. From the Oscar nominated Director of The Hours and Billy Elliott comes this landmark production from the National Theatre which follows the mystery surrounding the death of a young woman, and the revelations that shake the foundations of the prosperous Birling family.

An all-star cast take to the stage in the heart-warming and bittersweet comedy, Steel Magnolias, from Tuesday 10 – Saturday 14 April. Made famous by the 1989 film adaptation, this moving production stars Kacey Ainsworth, Isla Blair, Cheryl Campbell, Cherie Lunghi, Sadie Pickering and Denise Welch and celebrates enduring friendships, humour and love in the midst of life’s great hardships.

The hugely popular Agatha Christie Theatre Company returns with a new production of one of the queen of crime’s most popular stories, Murder on the Nile, from Tuesday 17 – Saturday 21 April. Honeymooners Simon and Kay find themselves being trailed by an old flame who is prime suspect when a body is discovered on board the Egyptian steamer. Starring Kate O’Mara (Dynasty), Denis Lill (The Royal) Susie Amy (Footballer’s Wives) Chloe Newsome (Coronation Street), Ben Nealon (Soldier Soldier) and 60s pop idol, Mark Wynter.

Northern Ballet Theatre makes a welcome return to Cardiff with their magical new production of Beauty and the Beast from Tuesday 24 – Saturday 28 April. Marking their unique stamp on the timeless fairytale, NBT’s enchanting adaptation sparkles with colour, haute-couture style costumes, breathtaking dancing and a beautiful score played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Shakespeare’s Globe presents Henry V from Tuesday 1 – Saturday 5 May. This masterpiece about the turbulence of war and the art of peace portrays the romantic story of Henry’s campaign to recapture the English possessions in France. Directed by Dominic Dromgoole, Henry V recently opened the new Globe.

The hit West End show Dancing in the Streets returns to Cardiff with its exciting celebration of Motown from Monday 7 – Saturday 12 May. Sure to have audiences dancing in the aisles, this high-energy production features a talented cast and all the favourite hits by artists such as The Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & the Pips and many more.

The action-packed musical for all the family, Swallows and Amazons comes to the New Theatre from Tuesday 15 – Saturday 19 May. The story of an idyllic era, of endless summer evenings and the beauty of a youthful imagination, this delightful production follows Captain John and his able crew as they set sail to Wildcat Island on an exotic adventure. Suggested Age 6+.

Orbit Theatre presents a great half-term treat for all the family with the classic musical, Annie from Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 June. This feel-good story of Orphan Annie, whose rags-to-riches adventures in depression-hit America, have delighted generations is packed full of memorable songs including Tomorrow, It’s the Hard-Knock Life and many more.

Ending the season is one of the country’s best-loved playwrights, Alan Bennett in his beautifully observed and witty play The Lady in the Van from Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 June. Starring Nichola McAuliffe (Surgical Spirit, Kiss Me Kate), life imitates art in this story of the itinerant Miss Shepherd, who lived in a van in Alan Bennett’s driveway for many years. The Lady in the Van is a poignant, funny but unsentimental account of their strange relationship and Miss Shepherd’s bizarre escapades in his inimitable style.

This season’s performances interpreted in British Sign Language are Star Quality (Saturday 11 February 2.30pm), Annie (Saturday 9 June 2.00pm).
