It is a company run for young people by young people. Since its creation in 2009, the company has flourished and attracted cast members from all over the UK. Recent productions have been The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro; both of which were sell out productions at The Gate Theatre in Cardiff to high critical acclaim. Opera’r Ddraig provides opportunities for all involved in the professional production of an opera. The company also provides valuable collaborations with professional companies and individuals in the form of free private coaching, master classes, lectures and informal feedback. Opera’r Ddraig 2012 Season Following the success of The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro, Opera'r Ddraig is building on its winning formula, featuring singers and orchestral musicians, (from institutions such as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff University to members of Only Men Aloud!), in an operatic double bill of opera in the beautiful surroundings of the The Gate, a converted church in the heart of Roath. Harsh times create an even harsher society: in a world of drought, violent justice, and power through political marriage - can love thrive in the barren of the desert? From the bright and inventive young Galatea; her headstrong lover Acis, to their predatory ruler Polyphemus and the melancholy Queen Dido, Opera'r Ddraig explores the operatic world’s created by Handel and Purcell in the same setting; a journey through the society of Carthage. Join us in February as our 45-strong company and orchestra present some of the finest operatic material to emerge from the baroque period; expect an evening of passion, tragedy and timeless music |
