‘Turning 20’
Britain’s premiere dance company of disabled and non-disabled dancers celebrates its 20th anniversary with a bold triple bill

Candoco Dance Company is travelling to the past, present and future in its new performance ‘Turning 20’. Coming to The Riverfront, Newport on Wednesday 14 March, Candoco presents a trio of commissions specifically for their 20th anniversary.

Founded in 1991 by Celeste Dandeker and Adam Benjamin, Candoco was the first integrated dance company in the UK.

The performance consists of three pieces taking the audience on a journey through the past, present and future. Piece 1, entitled ‘Looking Back’, is created by French artist Rachid Ouramdane who combines strong visuals and striking costumes with unforgettable soundscapes to create an atmospheric piece. Drawing on the performers’ pasts, he reveals portraits of life to create poetic, often dark, and ultimately compassionate work.

Looking at the present, piece 2, ‘This is it’, is the first time Candoco has presented a solo performance. Canadian-born choreographer Matthias Sperling captures the uniqueness of one dancer, Vicky Malin, in a lighthearted solo.

The performance is concluded by a restaging of the celebrated American choreographer Trisha Brown’s signature work, ‘Set and Reset’ which was premiered in 1983, entitled by Candoco as ‘Set and Reset/Reset’. Using the original concepts from her playful choreography, the work is set to a driving score by Laurie Anderson with a new set design by visual artist David Lock.

You can celebrate with Candoco for just £14, (£12 reductions, £8 schools). To book, contact Box Office on 01633 656757 or visit www.newport.gov.uk/theriverfront. Follow us on Twitter @riverfrontarts and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheRiverfront
