Masters of fantastical theatre, Hoipolloi, kick off the Hijinx Residencies

This month, acclaimed theatre company, Hoipolloi, will be the first visiting company to provide performance training workshops as part of an exciting series of residencies hosted by Hijinx Theatre. Hoipolloi, whose growing list of awards includes a 2011 BBC Audio Drama Award for its radio work with Welsh artist Hugh Hughes, will lead two week-long improvisation workshops in Cardiff for an inclusive group of up to 20 participants.

The Hoipolloi course kicks off the Hijinx Residencies, a programme of workshops led by some of the foremost theatre companies working in the UK today, including Complicite, Frantic Assembly and Spymonkey. Under the banner of the Hijinx Residencies, the courses will offer participants the chance to train in a variety of skills, including clowning, contact improvisation, creating chorus, devising and forum theatre. Hijinx Residencies Director, Ben Pettitt-Wade, commented: “We’re really excited to be welcoming these companies to Cardiff, and hope that as many people as possible take advantage of this incredible opportunity to train with such fantastic companies right on our doorstep.”

Each Residency will include a number of performers with learning disability from The Academy, Hijinx’s new training course for learning disabled performers. The Hijinx Residencies are designed to give an opportunity for participants to learn from some of the masters in the trade, as well as giving practitioners the opportunity to explore working with an inclusive group.

Pettitt-Wade commented: ”I was delighted by the response from all the companies we asked to be involved, who are all thrilled about working with a group which will include actors with learning disability”. Funding from Arts Council of Wales Training Fund has made it possible for Hijinx Theatre to offer these opportunities through the Hijinx Residencies.

Week one of the Hoipolloi residency will focus on ‘getting it wrong’ and week two on ‘embodying the other’. Simon Bedford, Executive Producer at Hoipolloi, said: “We hope that participating in a Hoipolloi workshop is as much fun as seeing one of our shows. It’s about creating a space without pressure where performers can explore, experiment and most importantly, fail and get things wrong. It’s in those unplanned moments that we believe some of the most exciting creative events can take place.”

Hoipolloi’s improvisation workshops launch the Hijinx Residencies on 19 March and run for two weeks at Chapter Arts. To apply for a place on either or both of the Hoipolloi courses, or for more information about any of the Residencies, contact Ben Pettitt-Wade at ben.pettittwade@hijinx.org.uk or 02920 300331, or join the ‘Hijinx Residencies’ group on National Theatre Wales community.
