Shakespeare’s As You Like It at the New Theatre, Cardiff

Shakespeare’s As You Like It at the New Theatre, Cardiff
Clwyd Theatr Cymru returns to the New Theatre, Cardiff with their new production of one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, As You Like It, from Tuesday 20 – Saturday 24 March. Celebrating the transforming power of love, As You Like It is a girl meets boy story which overturns the traditional rules of courtship and romance.

Usurped by Frederick, his brother, Duke Senior finds sanctuary in the Forest of Arden with his noblemen. When Rosalind, his daughter, sees Orlando’s bravery in a wrestling match they fall in love at first sight. Rosalind is banished by Duke Frederick and, in fear of her life, flees into the forest, accompanied by her loyal cousin Celia and Touchstone, the Jester. In hiding and disguised as a man, she sets out to find her exiled father.

When Orlando posts love letters to Rosalind all over the forest, she maintains her disguise to woo him. A series of mistaken identities and amorous encounters unfold as, away from the rigid world of court, the forest becomes a place of freedom and discovery.

As You Like It is directed by Terry Hands, a Director of Clwyd Theatr Cymru where his recent productions include Blackthorn, a new play by Gary Owen and The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare.

Hedydd Dylan plays Rosalind. She made her stage debut at Clwyd in Noises Off in 2009 and then starred as Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, for which she won an Ian Charleson award - a national accolade presented to acknowledge the best classical stage performances in Britain by professional actors under 30. She was Alice in Arden of Faversham and Katherina in The Taming of the Shrew, both directed by Terry Hands. Her recent work also includes the part of Regan in King Lear at West Yorkshire Playhouse. Heddydd, originally from Aberystwyth, is an Associate of Clwyd Theatr Cymru.

Hedydd is joined by a hugely talented cast that includes Torchwood’s Kai Owen who plays Charles, the wrestler, Alex Felton (All’s Well That Ends Well at the National Theatre, Pride and Prejudice) as Orlando, Christian Patterson (Mr Bumble in the West End production of Oliver!, Journey’s End, Guys and Dolls) as Touchstone, the Jester, Robert Blythe (High Hopes, Deep Cut) as Duke Senior, Philip Bretherton (Blackthorn, Pygmalion, As Time Goes By, Coronation Street) as Jaques, Ifan Huw Dafydd (Festen, Gavin and Stacey, Stella) as Corin, Antonia Kinlay (Celia), Dyfrig Morris (Duke Frederick) and Daniel Hawksford (First Lord).
