U.Dance Wales – a showcase of some of the best youth dance in North Wales. |
Over 60 young dancers will descend upon Galeri in Caernarfon on Monday 2 April for U.Dance Wales – a showcase of some of the best youth dance in North Wales. Youth dance groups from Aberystwyth to Wrexham are already busy creating and rehearsing their pieces for what promises to be a dynamic celebration of young people dancing! Between them, the nine participating groups cover a range of different dance styles – creative, street, urban, contemporary – offering something for everyone. They cover an age-range of 11 – 21 years, include some dancers who are relatively new to performance and others who are about to embark upon professional dance training, and represent a number of different regions across North Wales. Participating groups are: Penmaenmawr Youth Dance (Gwynedd), Dawns i Bawb Street Dance Crew (Gwynedd), NEW Dance Performance Technique Group (Wrexham), Cwmni Dawns Ieuenctid Ceredigion/Ceredigion Youth Dance Company (Ceredigion), The Sound Moves Youth Dance Project (Conwy), C.U.E Performers (Conwy), Yr Academi/The Academy (Conwy), Pwllheli School of Performing Arts (Gwynedd) National Youth Dance Wales (NYDW) will also perform traces choreographed by NYDW dancers with NYDW Artistic Director, Errol White, which premiered to enthusiastic audiences at the Richard Burton Theatre last summer. During the course of the day, prior to the evening performance, the groups will have an opportunity to see each others’ work. “Increasingly, young dancers are being encouraged to see other young dancers dancing. It demonstrates that they are part of a thriving and vibrant, Wales-wide youth dance community. U.Dance Wales goes a step further in that it also connects them with young dancers from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland via the U.Dance 2012 Festival” says Suzanne Firth, Development Co-ordinator for National Youth Dance Wales (NYDW) – one of the organising partners for the event. U.Dance 2012 is set to be the biggest event of its kind during July 2012, putting young talented dancers centre stage and promoting one of the fastest growing activities in the country. Up to two groups from Wales will be invited to attend the three-day Festival at London’s Southbank Centre for a whole host of dance performances, workshops and screenings. In excess of 400 young people, drawn from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, will join the main Festival, with even more young people and performance-groups attending as day-visitors.
