Earthfall’s sell-out production of At Swim Two Boys, based on the novel by Jamie O’Neill, concludes at the aptly named Riverfront Arts Centre, Newport on 25th April, 7:30pm, with the final ever performance. The show has been making waves across the UK, from a 3 week sell out show in London to Plymouth, Cardiff, Aberystwyth, Salford, Galeri and Lincoln and returns to Wales for the final performance along with a brilliant free Art Exhibition based on the production. Featuring two male dancers and two musicians, the production comes to life in a slowly filling lake in front of a wall of water. Set in Ireland in 1916, the story juxtaposes the developing love affair between two young men coming of age against the turbulent welfare of Ireland. Episodes from the novel are woven together through a fusion of extreme physicality, original live music and film, danced in 1000 litres of water. DYNAMIC DANCE MUSIC AND FILM Returning to Wales for the last ever time, the show has been one of Earthfall’s most successful ever. Critical and audience success across the country has left the show still in high demand despite two extensive tours, with almost twice as many shows as a normal Earthfall tour. “…An emotionally transparent relationship that in dance terms is filled with tenderness and vigour” The Times –Donald Hutera, Feb 2012 “The darker tug of erotic tension and the fear of self-revelation is also finely observed in the aggressive thrashing heft of the choreography.” The Guardian – Judith Mackrell Feb 2012 “Buoyantly performed, with live music adding pep to the steps, directors Jessica Cohen and Jim Ennis have distilled the essence of O’Neill’s stream-of-consciousness novel, creating a moving tale that ripples through time.” London Metro – Keith Watson Feb 2012 Jessica Cohen, co-artistic director commented, “We thought the show would be well received after its previous success, but we have been blown away by audience responses both after the show and online” Alongside this Earthfall have created several residencies with School and University Groups as well as 2 art exhibitions. The final night on 25th April, at Riverfront Arts Centre will play host to the second Art Installation of the At Swim Art Collective, with installation pieces created by students from University of Glamorgan being displayed in the basement in a free exhibition from 10:00 – 22:00. It will also host the last Q&A with the dancers, the last chance to meet and talk to Daniel Connor and Murilo Leite and some of the Artistic Team. With the production staged entirely in water, Earthfall is asking their audiences to become “Water Supporters”. The show uses over 1000 litres of water per performance, and Earthfall’s Water Supporters will offset the cost of this water usage with 10 % of all donations given straight to Water Aid. The novel At Swim Two Boys was written by Jamie O’Neil and this production is choreographed by Jim Ennis and Jessica Cohen, with music performed by Frank Naughton and Sion Orgon.
